For the second year in a row, we were invited to perform with the Superdogs show at the National Western Stock Show. The Superdogs show is a combination of events that showcase the athleticism and enthusiasm of our dogs while highlighting the bond between the human/dog teams. The dogs race over jumps and through tunnels of all shapes and sizes. They leap over high jumps, fly through the air for frisbees, weave through a long line of poles and other fun events that keep the crowd entertained. The show has great music, lighting and props and Chase and Herb keep the crowd cheering as they host the show with great energy!
This year Brisco ran in 3 events. He helped start out the show in a fast team relay over 5 jumps, into a tunnel, then back over the jumps. In true flyball style, he turned on the speed and did a great job! He also got to try his hand at the high jump. In practice, he cleared 5 bars with no problem. In the show, the jumps were spread out a lot farther and he was so amped by the crowd that he knocked a few of the bars because he was going so fast! His final event was in the final Deal-or-no-deal 2 dog realay event. This event has one tunnel that was elevated in the middle and another tunnel that corkscrewed up onto a dog walk type table. I was a little worried about the tunnels at high speed, but he nailed them and ran nice and fast! He was faster than the other dog both days. Too bad mom messed him up slightly on the 2nd day - we were quite a bit ahead of the dog we were racing, so I slowed up a tad and Brisco pulled off a jump. We got back on track and still won, but with one missed jump. Oh well - it's always the bad handler and not the dog. :)
When a person has 2 dogs that they want to run in the show, they have to choose which dog will be best at each event. Since Brisco is faster, he got the majority of the slots, but Mariah got to shine in Frisbee. She was the only small dog that was running in the group. On the first day she caught the first 2 with one bounce off the nose and catch on the second try. Quite a trick for the crowd. The second day she just barely missed the 1st introductory throw, but she caught the 2nd one and was in the running for longest catch. We led off the group and we had a great long throw and she caught it! All the other dogs went and only one dog (Power the Belgian Malinois) had a longer throw & catch. For being the smallest and oldest dog out there, she did awesome! Mariah is also the ideal "meet and greet" dog. After the shows, we take the dogs to visit with the crowd. There are a ton of kids and they all swarm to the dogs and pet them, hug them and take pictures. Mariah takes it all in stride and looks adorable while doing it. As long as she gets her cheese from mom, she'll pose for pictures or whatever is needed.
To top off the shows, Brisco turned 6 years old on the 19th. He got to spend the day performing in front of a crowd and I know he loved it! I picked up a special doggie cookie for him which he shared with Mariah after the show.
Overall - a fun time was had by all! Hopefully we can play again next year.
